Through support from the What Can We Do? (WCWD) Micro Grant from Asian American Arts Alliance and the Asian American Impact Fund, Roxy Chang from Gongming Collective and Interpreter-trainer Sayuri Gomez facilitated a 2 day Training on Language Justice & Community Interpreting on May 13th and May 14th, 2023. The workshop began with the first day focusing on interpreter ethics, an overview on the different fields of interpretation, and what it means to interpret for language justice. The day concluded with interpreters sharing stories of their own experiences around different interpretation settings in community: The good, the bad and the ugly.
The second day was a hands-on experience of simultaneous and consecutive interpretation. Participating interpreters were invited to use the interpretation equipment in turns and practice together. Facilitators offered language justice resources to participants following the workshop.

Gongming Collective for Language Justice invites you to join us in our upcoming Lunar New Year meet-up to get to know each other or reconnect for those who have been Gongming members! We are a Collective of Chinese interpreters that seek to build community with each other and uplift language justice through interpreting and centering different language needs in our Chinese-speaking communities, while helping to facilitate multilingual spaces.
For our meet-up, we hope to have casual conversation to check in on how we’ve been doing, thoughts about interpreting or other things in our current world, share new year cheers with the year of the Tiger, the zoom floor is open for any ideas!
November 2018
Within our communities, often times we have experienced the pain of wanting to express ourselves but not having the words to do so, particularly in the language of Chinese.
Gòngmíng Collective for Language organized a language skill share on 11/4 as an opportunity for us to identify and practice queer terms together, while building collective knowledge.
Based on talks with current prospective and current members, Chinese speakers who were born in the US and/or immigrated here later end up building their LGBTQ-related activism and identity in English, but when it comes to talking to Chinese-speaking community members about the issues that LGBTQ folks care about, people are still trying to find love-affirming spaces in the Chinese language and Chinese-speaking community.
In this event, we built on a word bank together of common terms related to identity, mental health, sex, relationships, and other LGBTQ-related terminology in Chinese. We discussed LGBTQ representation among other experiences in English, Mandarin and/or Cantonese.

After planning sessions for the Fall workshop series, what better way to end the summer than with a social! We planned on laying out at Sunset Park, but due to rain, we switched over to karaoke instead (and belted out birthday tunes to one of our beloved core members, Jessie)!

Thank you so much to the Asian American Impact Fund for supporting our collective! With their support, we will be rolling out a series of workshops later this year… in hopes of building out our collective to better serve immigrant communities and shift the power dynamics of language by ensuring that all community members have an opportunity to engage with local issues and beyond.

To commemorate the new Lunar New Year, our friends at the Chinatown Art Brigade were guest editors of issue 6 of Culture Push’s push/pull online journal. CAB reached out to Gòngmíng to help find translators and invited some of us to proofread both Chinese versions (Simplified & Traditional) of this issue. Check out some of their pieces on cultural organizing from New York > San Francisco > Vancouver > Cuba > Johannesburg > Lima > Toisan!
We kicked off the new year with an exchange with another budding bilingual Chinese-English group of mostly artists and creative arts professionals — Sinosolidarity — along with some additional new friends. We shared how both groups formed, discussed some of our dream projects and goals, and wrapped up the meet-up with hopes of collaborating in the future.
We closed out the year with a Karaoke Social, and met some new faces who were interested in developing and applying their language skills in service to the community.
